The Times: Are we ready for Children and Families Bill?

Charlotte Bradley, family partner at Kingsley Napley, debates in the Times whether we are ready for the Children and Families Bill. The Bill, which will have a second reading next week, recognises the vital role that both parents play in their children’s upbringing – from birth and throughout childhood, including the sad event of separation. It will also allow fathers to take maternity leave – though she believes it will take some years for this to become the norm. The Bill will also provide statutory recognition that it’s in a child’s interest to maintain an on-going relationship with both parents, unless they are at risk of harm. Ms Bradley concludes that with many children growing up with separate parents, any employment and family law changes that assist couples in staying together or, if separated, co-parenting properly are to be welcomed.
