Corporate and individual accountability for international crimes: Kingsley Napley hosts second International Criminal Law Conference

On 18th January 2019, Kingsley Napley will host its second International Criminal Law Conference, at The Charterhouse in Clerkenwell. The afternoon event, introduced by Rodney Dixon QC, will see two expert panels consider themes under the heading “Closing the Impunity Gap: Accountability for individuals and corporates for international crimes.”
 

The first panel chaired by Joanna Buckley of Matrix Chambers will see the following expert speakers consider the potential impact of the International Law Commission’s draft articles on Crimes Against Humanity, which may serve as the basis for a UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of said crimes:

• Clive Baldwin, senior legal adviser at Human Rights Watch
• Merryl Larry-White, senior associate at Debevoise & Plimpton
• Chanaka Wickremasinghe, senior advisory lawyer at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office

The second panel chaired by Katherine Tyler of Kingsley Napley focuses on developments in the sphere of Business and Human Rights, specifically in relation to corporate liability for international crimes. It will consider recent prosecutions of companies for their complicity in war crimes and crimes against humanity and other developments including the ILC draft articles on Crimes Against Humanity and the draft Binding Treaty on Business and Human Rights. It will go on to consider what these developments might mean for companies and how companies can set about integrating human rights into their business. The panel consists of:

• Julianne Hughes-Jennett, partner at Hogan Lovells
• Wayne Jordash QC, managing partner of Global Rights Compliance
• Elodie Grant Goodey, consultant at Saltus Consulting Ltd
• Salma Karmi-Ayyoub, former litigation director and currently a consultant for the NGO Al-Haq
