Changes to Tier 4 take effect

The changes to Tier 4, the student immigration route, took effect on 21 April 2011. Among those changes are an increase in the level of English required of students, an end to the work rights of students who are not at a university or publicly-funded further education college and an end to the ability of undergraduate students to bring their dependants to the UK (unless they are government-sponsored).

Other changes due to take place to the student route in April 2012 include a provision that only schools and colleges classified as Highly Trusted sponsors can sponsor students and the closure of the Tier 1 (Post-study work) route to new entrants.
