Blindness claim resulting from a Trust’s failure to organise routine diabetic retinopathy appointments and timely laser treatment. The claim settled for £1m in 2018

Introduction

The Claimant suffered the loss of vision in one eye after a hospital Trust failed to organise routine follow up diabetic retinopathy appointments and offer a timely laser treatment appointment when the Claimant developed retinal haemorrhage, which led to total retinal detachment.

We obtained an early admission of liability, and secured an interim payment for our client.  We settled the case for £1 million, four months before trial.

The issues in the case were around what sight the Claimant would have retained had the treatment been given, and whether the Claimant would have ordinarily been able to continue working to retirement age, regardless of the treatment failures.

Client Feedback:

“My case was a long process and at times it caused a great deal of anxiety and stress. Kirsty was with me every step of the way providing me with support and advice.

Kirsty took the time to know me, my family and my life. The work she did and the outcome that was achieved has given me a sense of closure and has provided me with financial security for myself and my daughter.

I am so grateful that I made the decision to go with this law firm. Kirsty achieved the perfect balance of always staying 100% professional whilst also giving me a sense of having someone who cared and was fighting my corner.”
